Under public building law, a building permit (also known as a construction permit or building authorization) is the authorization to erect, alter, or demolish structures, and is issued by the building authority. Construction may not begin until the building permit has been issued. Applying for a building permit is mandatory for building owners and, depending on the scope of the construction project, may involve a comprehensive approval process.
