Older Berliners remember the Berlin Wall, which ran right through Treptow and divided the right and left sides of Heidelberger Straße into West and East. Incidentally, the old district of Treptow was home to the longest stretch of the inner-city Wall, spanning 17 kilometers. The Wall is history, but the recreational appeal that Treptow holds for people is not. A very, very long time ago, by the way, the area where Treptow stands today was a marshy forest. That continues to shape the landscape to this day, which is why Treptow residents can enjoy such beautiful parks, forests, and plenty of water. Treptow is also sometimes referred to as the “Green Lung of Berlin.”

But just because we’ve talked so much about the greenery in the neighborhood here doesn’t mean the urban side is neglected. Quite the contrary: Treptow used to be an industrial hub, which is why there are still commercial properties and facilities from that era. These hold great potential, which some have already recognized. Some of these old factory buildings have been transformed into sought-after, loft-style apartments. Others are being turned into venues for art and culture. Here, one can truly say that the neighborhood is undergoing a transformation and is far from reaching the end of its journey.

By the way, music also comes from Treptow: The Berlin band “Treptow” makes wonderfully melodic, rock-inspired, and sometimes punk-influenced music, and their lyrics sometimes focus on their hometown. “In my eyes, you’re beautiful; I wish you could see yourself that way,” goes one line of a song. Could they have been referring to their district? We don’t know, but it would certainly fit. Treptow is imperfectly perfect—perhaps still a bit underrated—but with a wealth of potential that’s being recognized by more and more young people, creatives, and families.

Treptow is located in southeastern Berlin and borders Friedrichshain and Lichtenberg to the north, Kreuzberg to the northwest, Neukölln to the west, and Köpenick to the east and southeast. Its neighborhoods are Alt-Treptow, Plänterwald, Baumschulenweg, Niederschöneweide, Johannisthal, Adlershof, Altglienicke, and Bohnsdorf. Architecturally, the neighborhoods offer a mix ranging from Berlin’s 1920s historic buildings to 1960s apartment buildings and modern townhouses, providing real estate to suit every taste. While Treptow does have its own distinct neighborhoods, they are by no means as well-known or numerous as in some other parts of the capital. The Plänterwald neighborhood is a particularly lovely place to live. Stately villas and apartment buildings dominate the landscape here, and thanks to several allotment garden associations that have settled in Plänterwald, the area is also very green.

The Baumschulenweg neighborhood takes its name from what was once the world’s largest tree nursery, the Späth Tree Nursery. The grounds and buildings still exist and possess a very special charm, as the mansion and gardens transport visitors back to a bygone era. Overall, the neighborhood offers a lovely mix of single-family homes, older buildings, and more modern structures.

Alt-Treptow stands out in part because of its proximity to Kreuzberg and Neukölln, which makes it a very attractive place to live. Treptow residents also enjoy the “Badeschiff” on the Spree—a floating bathhouse surrounded by wooden docks for sunbathing and featuring an artificial sandy beach. The former industrial site of Niederschönweide could be of particular interest to investors. Many industrial buildings still stand and are waiting to be repurposed as residential or commercial spaces. There’s a lot going on here: construction, renovation, and redevelopment are underway. Its location right on the Spree is also a major draw.

Aviation enthusiasts should check out Johannisthal—this is where the site of the former Johannisthal Airfield is located, a place that played an important role in German aviation history. Since then, apartments and a landscape park, among other things, have been developed here. This neighborhood is characterized by low-density development with plenty of green space and a recreational atmosphere.

The Adlershof neighborhood exudes a special vibrancy: it is a hub for science, business, and media. This attracts an incredible number of people—especially young people—to this neighborhood. The residential buildings are often modern, and new housing is constantly being built.

In Altglienicke, life is pleasant and peaceful, with residents living primarily in single-family homes and townhouses. There is an old village center with a parish church, and the town’s landmark is an old water tower. The neighboring town of Bohnsdorf is similarly peaceful and boasts a must-see attraction: the Tuschkastensiedlung, built in 1913, which we’ll introduce to you in our “Sights” section.

Culture and the Economy in the Neighborhood

Above all, this former industrial site offers plenty of space and highly attractive properties that are ready to be redeveloped and put to new uses. Thanks to its excellent location, the district is also increasingly becoming a sought-after place to live, for example for young people and families.

The Adlershof neighborhood is a hub of scientific and economic activity. A massive research, technology, and media center has developed here, employing 22,000 people and hosting over 6,000 students. This, of course, holds enormous potential for attractive business relationships and professional connections.

The most famous site in Treptow is undoubtedly Treptower Park, home to the Soviet War Memorial and the Archenhold Observatory. The 19th-century park spans over 80 hectares and, with its river landscape, meadows, and dining options, offers an oasis of relaxation right in the heart of the city. Impossible to miss in the center of the park is a 30-meter-high statue: the Soviet Memorial. This statue and the military cemetery commemorate the soldiers who fell during the Battle of Berlin in World War II. The complex was completed in 1949.

The Archenhold Observatory is Germany’s oldest public observatory and also boasts the longest telescope, measuring 21 meters.

Fancy a boat tour? Then Treptow Harbor is the perfect place for you, because from here you can book excursions to Berlin’s city center, for example. You can also relax wonderfully at the harbor itself and let your gaze wander over the water.

If you’d like to experience the special charm of a historic garden and what was once the world’s largest tree nursery, you should pay a visit to the 19th-century Späth Arboretum. The site was already being used as a horticultural operation as early as 1720. Today, this paradise of trees and plants—with its ivy-covered manor house and outbuildings—belongs to Humboldt University, and biology students can conduct scientific research there to their heart’s content.

If you’d like to marvel at a genuine World Heritage Site, you’ll need to head to Bohnsdorf. There you’ll find the Tuschkastensiedlung, built in 1913 for working-class families. Beautifully designed, small houses in bright colors, complete with gardens and garden fences. A true idyll that architecture and history enthusiasts alike should visit.

Dining, Nightlife & Shopping

When it comes to dining options, Treptow obviously can’t compete with its trendy neighboring districts, such as Mitte or Friedrichshain. But the district is “on the rise,” as they say. There are a few clubs and good restaurants that some Berliners consider insider tips.

One example is the Treptower Klause. It sounds like home-style cooking and something boring—but it’s not. Here, you’ll find modern German cuisine with Mediterranean or Asian influences, served at a gourmet level but at prices that won’t break the bank. A visit to the Klipper—the restaurant on and inside a ship right on the Spree—is also a real treat. There, you can enjoy breakfast with a view of the water or sink your teeth into a pork knuckle in the evening. But no matter what Treptow has—or doesn’t have—to offer gastronomically, one thing is certain: there’s a pedestrian bridge connecting Treptow to Kreuzberg, and there you’ll find absolutely everything to satisfy your craving for fun.

Treptow isn’t known for its shopping options. But if you want to walk short distances from one store to the next and are looking for the usual major retail brands, you can shop for shoes, clothing, or home decor at the Parkcenter at Treptower Park. Or you can stroll down one of the shopping streets in Alt-Treptow, where you’ll find several well-known brands as well as smaller shops.

There’s another shopping mall in Schöneweide, where you’ll find shoes, jewelry, clothes, and even a furniture store, among other things. But when it comes to shopping, the same rule applies: Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain aren’t far away if you’re looking for a bit more variety.

Infrastructure & Mobility

The infrastructure is well developed, with schools, doctors, supermarkets, and other stores for daily needs available, although the selection is naturally not as diverse as in the central districts. Nevertheless, all neighborhoods are great places to live, including the quieter areas such as Altglienicke or Bohnsdorf. Here, too, there is a wide selection of supermarkets and discount stores.

Public transportation can be described as relatively good. The Görlitz Railway runs right through the middle of Treptow. This refers to a railway line that runs from Cottbus through Berlin to Görlitz. There are various S-Bahn lines that operate on this route, including the Berlin S-Bahn, which covers the area in and around Berlin. There are also numerous bus routes. For drivers, there are several major thoroughfares that provide quick access to other parts of Berlin.
