Formerly known as the "red Wedding", the district of Berlin-Mitte is now colourful and multicultural. More and more young families, artists and start-up companies are moving to the former workers' settlement - no wonder, since the district offers ideal conditions thanks to renovated flats in old buildings and good transport connections. Long known as a purely residential area, Wedding has undergone a major transformation in the last decade. From excellent restaurants to cosy and affordable cafés to wild bars and exciting small shops, a colourful scene has established itself in Wedding. In addition, many artistic and social initiatives as well as active neighbourhood communities enrich the district.
Wedding is predominantly built up with Wilhelminian-style houses, which are characterised by their elaborate stucco ceilings, large double doors and high rooms. Particularly popular are the areas in the north, where the large Wedding parks are located, Schillerpark and Volkspark Rehberge. Both parks are protected garden monuments and have wide meadows and branching paths for sport and recreation - in winter it is even possible to toboggan here. The older Schillerpark is considered Berlin's first people's park because of its new open park planning at the beginning of the 20th century. The southern part of Wedding between "Nauener Platz" and "Westhafen", on the other hand, benefits from its proximity to the historic centre and its idyllic location on the Spandau Ship Canal, which separates Wedding from Moabit. Here lies the "Plötzensee", which has a lido and is one of the bathing lakes close to the city centre.
