The plot on the corner of Danziger Strasse and Bötzowstrasse is occupied by a classy period building from 1906. The brightly painted multi-dwelling unit is conspicuous with its characteristic façade design, which includes all the handsome elements typifying a Belle Époque period building. Generous balconies and oriels with four-pane windows plus individually shaped gables define this building. Entrance doors with their preserved original wooden ornaments and glass inserts were overhauled. The corner building divides into four floors plus an undeveloped attic, while front, side and back buildings are grouped around a quiet leafy courtyard. A second side building beyond offers another courtyard with old-growth trees. The refurbished 2,5-bedroom flat is located in this side building on the third floor. The flat extends over about 66 square metres and is supplied with heat and hot water by a self-contained heating unit. A home office of about 4 square metres branches off from the entryway. Going down the hallway on the right-hand side will take you to an eat-in kitchen that is perfect for cooking and dining together. From here, you have access to the cosy living room of about 17 square metres, which comes with a balcony that will tempt you to while away sunny afternoons. The master bedroom of about 14 square metres lies right next to it. The rooms, which feature parquetry and large wooden double-cased windows radiate the charm typically associated with period buildings. The flat’s bathroom is equipped with a tub. Prenzlauer Berg has evolved from a Bohemian neighbourhood of the immediate post-Cold-War years into one of its trendiest localities, and represents an almost uninterrupted streetscape of Belle Époque buildings with green courtyards and avenues. Carefully designed town squares and green spaces invest each quarter with a distinct neighbourhood character. Probably the best-known place for getting together here is Mauerpark in the Gleimviertel neighbourhood, which attracts people year-round with its flea market and open-air music. The sports complex next door is great for working out, while the Max-Schmeling-Halle arena is a popular venue for concerts and sport events. By contrast, the Kollwitz-Kiez quarter is a more settled, family-friendly area. The Saturday street market on Kollwitzplatz is an institution for most local residents. They congregate here not just to shop for fresh produce, but also to sample delicatessen or to try on the latest off-brand fashion. The Kulturbrauerei cultural centre nearby is open night and day with its richly varied options, which include a cinema, a dance studio, a musical instrument shop, publishing houses and restaurants. A stroll from here through the equally charming Winsviertel neighbourhood will take you to the Bötzowviertel area south of it with its picturesque Belle Époque buildings. In the mid-nineteenth century, a brewery and the greenery of Schweizer Garten with its stage, café and beer garden became a bourgeois hot spot for good times in the neighbourhood. Today, you will find upscale townhouses here. But cafés still line the streets, along with up-market designer stores, flower shops, second-hand clothing stores and child wear boutiques. Close at hand and just beyond the borough boundary lies Volkspark Friedrichshain, the city’s oldest public park. Popular destinations here include a climbing wall, an inline skating track, the fairytale fountain and the outdoor cinema, which is popular in the summertime.
